Interactive Field Trips

We cannot wait to welcome your students into the Halloran Centre for the Orpheum Theatre Group's Interactive Field Trips! Connected to Tennessee State Education Standards in both Fine Arts and English Language Arts, these hands-on workshops are designed to keep your students highly engaged while exploring their creativity and having fun in a live, in-person arts setting!

Please note, the maximum number of students we are able to host for an Interactive Field Trip varies based on a number of factors, including staffing and space availability. The Orpheum Theatre Group reserves the right to set the maximum capacity number for any Interactive Field Trip at registration based on these varying factors.

 


For Grades 3 - 12

Broadway Basics: Wicked or Les Miserables

  • Grades: 3rd - 12th
  • Length: 3 Hours
  • Location: In person at the Halloran Centre

These Interactive Field Trips introduce 3rd -12th grade students to music and movement from either Wicked (the untold story of the Witches of Oz) or Les Miserables (set against the backdrop of the French Revolution). This field trip builds students' speaking, listening, and critical thinking skills and is fun and engaging for all experience and ability levels.

Broadway Basics integrates Tennessee State Standards in Fine Arts with Tennessee State Standards in English Language Arts. Please see below for more information.


ACTivating Emotions: Theatre, Literacy, and Social & Emotional Learning

  • Grades: 3rd -12th
  • Length: 3 Hours
  • Location: In-Person at the Halloran Centre

How do we give students permission to feel? After years of unprecedented stress and anxiety, young people need tools to name, express, and regulate complex emotions and feelings. Actors are experts at using the tools of body, voice, and imagination to walk in a characters’ shoes and express emotions. Infusing literacy standards and texts currently being studied in your classroom, an OTG teaching artist will guide students through building an emotion vocabulary, telling stories to understand emotional responses, and standing in a characters’ shoes to imagine the causes behind feelings and reactions.

For Grades K - 2

Stepping Into the Story: Thank You, Omu! or The Rainbow Fish

  • Grades: K-2nd
  • Length: 3 Hours
  • Location: In-Person at the Halloran Centre

Stepping Into the Story gives K-2nd grade students the opportunity to explore their favorite books through their bodies, voices, and imaginations. This field trip engages students in a hands-on, immersive workshop that explores creativity, literacy, and critical thinking as they take the story off the page and onto the stage.

Classrooms will either explore the book Thank You, Omu! by Oge Mora (Caldecott Honor and Coretta Scott King Award Winner) or The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Pfister. In Thank You, Omu!, Omu (pronounced Ah-moo) shares her delicious thick red stew with everyone in the neighborhood. After Omu gives away the stew to her grateful neighbors, they repay her generosity with food and gifts of their own. In The Rainbow Fish, a beautiful, but lonely fish learns to overcome his pride by sharing his glitter scales with other sea creatures. Students will explore themes of sharing, generosity, community, and culture as they step into Omu’s or Rainbow Fish’s stories.
