STAR= Students Take A Role - in their community, at the Orpheum, and in their theatrical future.
Star Council is a service organization that offers any Memphis area High School student the opportunity to “take a role” by providing theatrically based opportunities for both learning and volunteering. Students will meet monthly to participate in one community service opportunity per session, while also exploring how theatre works in service to the community it is a part of. Orpheum staff “headliners” will speak to students about the many professional opportunities there are in the theatrical world and how every role is of service to the overall mission of the Orpheum: “to enhance the communities we serve by utilizing the performing arts to entertain, educate and enlighten.” Students will also be required to complete service hours for the Orpheum by volunteering for fun opportunities such as ushering for Broadway Musicals, assisting with Kids Night on Broadway, and providing support for the High School Musical Theatre Awards. Come be a valuable STAR at the Orpheum, share your love of theatre with peers from across the midsouth, and make a difference in your community at the same time!
In order to be a part of STAR Council, students must commit to attending monthly sessions, as well as volunteering for at least 3 service opportunities outside of the meetings. More than two absences will result in dismissal from STAR council. Meeting dates for the year are scheduled for the following Sundays from 2-4 pm (unless otherwise noted):
October 24 • November 14 (1-3pm) • December 19
January 23 • February 27 • March 27 • April 24
Please be on the lookout for applications for next year, and be sure to stay up-to-date with all Orpheum Education activities by joining our email club!
